Flat-packed Corner Cabinet
A simple to construct flat-packable cabinet with a unique design

A Different Approach to Flat-pack
Most modern flat-packed furniture uses sheet material as the primary structure. More complex pieces often rely heavily on hardware and require significant assembly. By using a puzzle-like frame approach, I was able to create a unique piece of furniture that requires no tools to assemble and uses only a few shelf pins as hardware. This approach was inspired by a previous joinery project where I had explored joinery based on kumiko patterns and techniques.
Assembly

Planning & Build

The assembly of this cabinet works because each step locks the previous in place resulting in a very strong final product. By itself, the frame will easily collapse, but when the 1/4″ plywood sides are inserted into their slots, the frame is ‘locked’. Inserting the shelf pins into the frame through holes in the sides prevents the sides from sliding. Placing the shelves farther locks the frame and sides in place. When fully constructed, the shelf is quite sturdy.
